Stranded on the Knife Edge: Teens Airlifted Off Colorado's Wildest Peak

by Derek Siegel

Date: June 24–25, 2025
Location: Capitol Peak, Maroon Bells–Snowmass Wilderness, Colorado

Two 19-year-old hikers from North Carolina were rescued by helicopter after getting stranded on Capitol Peak, one of Colorado’s most dangerous 14ers. Known for its infamous "Knife Edge" and exposed, technical routes, Capitol Peak has a long history of fatal accidents and rescues.

On June 24, the pair attempted a shortcut during their descent from the 14,130-foot summit and became stuck on the peak’s steep north face at around 13,000 feet. As darkness set in and weather deteriorated, they wisely called for help rather than attempting a risky self-rescue.

Mountain Rescue Aspen and the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office coordinated with the Colorado Army National Guard to plan a hoist rescue at first light. The hikers, uninjured but stranded without a safe exit, were told to remain in place overnight.

At 6 a.m. on June 25, a Black Hawk helicopter launched from Aspen’s Sardy Field despite challenging weather, including snow and lightning. Rescuers managed to locate and hoist the hikers, who were wearing dark clothing that made them difficult to spot. Both were flown to Aspen and evaluated; neither sustained injuries.

Capitol Peak: Colorado’s Most Dangerous 14er

Capitol Peak is notorious for its technical challenges and deadly exposure. Over the years, multiple climbers have fallen to their deaths attempting to cross the Knife Edge ridge or while descending via unmarked routes. In recent seasons, several fatalities and injuries have underscored the mountain’s serious risks.

Pitkin County Sheriff Michael Buglione emphasized that there is no alternate safe route down the north face of Capitol Peak. He stated:

“Capitol Peak is not a walk-up; it is a technical climb. If there were a safe shortcut, it would already be the standard route.”

Safety Reminders for Hiking Colorado’s 14ers

Authorities urge all hikers and climbers to prepare properly for any Colorado 14er summit attempt:

  • Carry adequate food, water, and extra warm clothing.
  • Wear a helmet and bring a GPS or satellite communication device.
  • Stay on the established route; do not attempt shortcuts.
  • Wear bright, visible clothing to aid potential rescue efforts.

This incident adds to a busy season of Colorado 14er rescues. Earlier in June, helicopter rescues were conducted on Torreys Peak after a lightning strike and on Quandary Peak for another stranded hiker.

Helicopter hoist rescues are extremely technical, dangerous, and resource-intensive, often involving multiple agencies and specialized crews. They highlight the importance of respecting high-alpine terrain and preparing for rapidly changing conditions.
