Veronica Aimee Chik Becomes Youngest to Climb 5.14b With Bold Send of “Fish Eye” in Oliana, Spain

by Derek Siegel

At just 11 years old, Veronica Aimee Chik has officially joined the ranks of climbing’s elite, becoming the youngest person ever to redpoint a 5.14b (8c) with her successful ascent of Fish Eye, the legendary limestone line in Oliana, Spain.

The ascent marks a historic moment not only in sport climbing but in youth athletics as a whole—a clean, powerful send of a world-class route by a climber barely tall enough to clip the chains without a dynamic move.

Set in the steep, sun-baked walls of Catalonia, Fish Eye has been a proving ground for the best in the sport since its first ascent by Chris Sharma in 2007. Stretching 50 meters of relentless overhung tufa and crimp sequences, the line is a true test of endurance, precision, and mental resolve. For Veronica, it was a challenge that demanded more than physical preparation—it required patience, persistence, and poise far beyond her years.

“Honestly, it didn’t feel real at first,” she told a small crowd at the base after lowering off. “I’d fallen so many times near the top. But today, something just clicked.”

In a world where climbing has quickly become a polished Olympic sport, Veronica’s approach is refreshingly raw. Raised between schoolbooks and hangboards, she trains under the guidance of her coach and father, blending structured discipline with playful exploration. Think less Red Bull athlete, more neighborhood kid with freakish finger strength and an encyclopedic knowledge of route beta.

Her ascent adds her name to a short but significant list of climbers—mostly adults—who have topped out Fish Eye. But more than that, it signals the next evolution in youth climbing, where boundaries are not just being pushed, but reimagined entirely.

“We didn’t set out to break records,” says her father. “We just kept showing up, and she kept trying. That’s it.”

There’s something poetic in that simplicity: show up, try hard, have fun. And maybe, if the stars align—and the conditions are dry—you send.
